Let’s begin:

We’re back in 2019

Date: Feb 12th 2019

We’re looking for speakers. Send the Call for Proposals form to people you think would be good speakers, or email us and tell us who you’d like to see.

SustainableUX & Friends in the news

Mozilla published their Health of the Internet report.  It has a substantial section on the environmental footprint of the internet, and cites from the Click Green report from Greenpeace as well as SustainableUX speaker Tim Frick’s Sustainable Design and Andrew Boardman’s Serving.Green. You can check out their talks in our archive: http://www.sustainableux.com/talks/

FastCoDesign picked up the environmental angle and ran a piece on The Rise of Green UX. Our conference and especially Amanda Sopkin’s 2018 talk get a mention.

Caught our eye

GDPR—General Data Protection Regulation, or the reason behind your recent inbox onslaught from companies updating their privacy policies—has had an interesting effect on many international news sites. For instance, the LA times now refuses to serve an EU version - they can’t figure out how to strip back all the tracking on their site to make it GDPR complaint. Other sites have had to disable tracking in various forms in order to keep publishing to the EU. 2-time SustainableUX speaker Chris Adams takes a look under the hood and works out the environmental impact.

Friend-of-SustainableUX Jack Lenox has published a super-slim-line wordpress theme. Wordpress runs ⅓ of the web, and most stock templates are pretty bloated, so hopefully this encourages others to think in terms of optimisation.

Lastly, I’ve been working on an updated version of my UX Worker CO2 calculator spreadsheet.  It's intended to help folks take a guess at their working carbon footprint and find ways to trim down.

If you give it a try, let me know – I’d love to know which direction to improve it in next.

Help us grow (sustainably)

We have a marketing budget of zilch, and completely rely on word-of-mouth (and twitter) to get our message out. So, we extra-appreciate every tweet and mention.

Example: “SustainableUX is back for 2019 and looking for speakers. If you are in design or tech and have something to say about climate change, check them out: sustainableux.com“

Your donations at work

SustainableUX 2018 raised a bunch of money for designated good causes.

One of our beneficiaries, Trees for The Future, posted this short documentary on the forest gardens project we supported.

Thanks for reading!
